- On the main road which leads to Dublin is situated a Lime Kiln. It is the property of John Hanlon who lives a short distance from it. This kiln was built between one hundred and fifty and two hundred years ago, and has since been in the hands of the Hanlon family. A lime kiln is a building shaped on the side like a spinning top, and holds about fifty tons of coal and fire. In a quarry which is quite near the kiln the lime stones are blasted. A hole is bored in the rock and a long cord which is known as fuse is placed in the hole, the end of the fuse being some distance from the rock. Fire is put to the fuse and so goes to the hole in the rock, which is full of powder and almost immediately the rock flies into the air in pieces. These stones are then taken to the kiln. Layers of stone and layers of breeze are put in on top of the kiln. As the stones burn they turn white and when rightly burned they are taken out from a small(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
