    while the Normans built square towers with an open-air floor on top.
    There are a large number of trees of every kind and the oldest one is reputed to be Saint Melruaen's Willow Tree. There are many old tombs in the graveyard which are somewhat similar to the dolmans [sic] used by the ancient Irish but it is not known what date they are as the writing on them is indecipherable but the oldest known grave is Saint Melruaen's which is covered by a round stone commonly called the "Griddle". There are some old crosses somewhat similar to the cross of Monasterboice, but they may not be of any great age. Some of these are beautifully ornamented with Celtic designs. These crosses are mostly hewn from stone and marble, but there are many others which are made from wood and iron. These may not be of any great antiquity, as wood would not withstand the ravages of time for any great age.
    Close to the old tower in the graveyard there is a trap door which is generally believed to be the entrance to a tunnel which formerly connected the tower to a ruined monastery standing in the grounds of the
