- Long ago marriages were very different from what they are now. In a house where a marriage took place the feast lasted for a week. When a man wanted a wife he sent word to the parents of a girl whom he knew had a fortune, then they arranged to meet in some house in the nearest town. Here the 'match' would be settled. There would be a great amount of talk and argument going on, and there would be plenty of drink consumed. Money was very scarce in those days, and if the man wanted a big fortune it would have to be made up by giving cattle such as cows heifers or bullocks, as the case may be.
