- On the Eve of Saints John's feast June 23rd there is an old custom of lighting fires in his honour. This custom was handed down to us from the pagans who used to light fires in honour of one of their gods. In the olden times the fires were lighted on the mountains and hills throughout Ireland. There are not so many fires now in Ireland on that night because that custom is dying out. But wherever those fires are still maintained some of the customs are also kept that were kept by the people long ago.
