    The bottom of the basket was made seprately and it was joined to the basket by means of two gads. The bottom of the basket was kept closed by means of a stick called a sluidín. When one wanted to empty the basket he had only to pull the cord in the sluidín and the load would fall off.
    That time a pair of turf baskets was to be found in almost every house in the district. The bogs then were very usually soft and undrained and the person who could change out his turf on the donkey and baskets was considered very fortunate. This work was very slow but it was far worse when the poor beast would go bogging that is he would sink to his stomach under his load.
