- There was never such a big wind before or after like the Big Wind of 1839. It started in the night when all the people were sound asleep. At first it was only like a strong breeze, but after a while it arose to a great storm. When it became very bad the people were getting uneasy and so they all got up at the hour of mid-night. Every farmer was tying down his stacks of oats and ricks of hay. At last it got very bad and the people could not stop the hay and oats from going. At last the roofs of houses was flying away with the storm. Some houses fell down altogether. Very few houses could be seen standing when the wind began to abate. The wind lasted for many days, and by the time it stopped walls were knocked.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
