- Shops were not as common in olden times that there are now. People had always to go to the nearest towns to make purchaces. Sometimes buying and selling was carried on after Mass. Long ago people came on Sundays to hire people. The people came after Mass with their tools and came home at night. This is not practised still. When buying and selling was carried on after Mass it was vegetables and all sorts of eatables they sold. Money was mostly given for goods but sometimes labour was given instead. Goods were often bartered in the district. Fridays and Sundays were days considered unlucky for buying or transacting business on. The markets were held in the towns in former times. Pedlars and dealers visited districts in former times. They were looking for rags and feathers. They still visit the district. There is a story told in the district about a pig which made a good bit of money for a man(continues on next page)
