- All the old houses were thatched. Sometimes farmers thatched their own houses, but usually there was a local thatcher in the district. The thatch was got from straw.
The bed was placed in the kitchen beside the fire. It was called a settle-bed.
In some houses, the fire was in the corner, but mostly, it was to be seen at the gable-wall. Some houses had no chimney, a few had a hole in the roof instead.
Old floors were made of clay.
Halfdoors were, and still are, very common in the district.
