  1. One night when I was sitting by the fireside, the house - maid told me a story concerning my district of Ballyjamesduff, and the following is the story.
    One night a man was going home on a horse and it happened to be very late. When he came to the ruins of an old house, the horse stood still, and refused to go any further. The man turned the horse and went back to the first turn in the road. Then he made the horse race in the direction of the house but when he reached the house again the horse stood still and refused to go any further. He turned his horse again and rode into the town. When he reached the town he knocked at one of the houses and told what
