   Oaten bread was the bread eaten in this district long ago. It was made from oats grown in the district. They also used to eat boxty bread and and potato-cake with milk because they had no tea and hardly any flour. The oaten bread was made on a griddle. A griddle is a round shaped vessel with one leg and a stand made of iron at the back. There is only an odd griddle in the country now. The griddle was put standing in the middle of the fire and it supported the cake of bread The oaten bread was mixed with water and sometimes sugar or carraway seeds were put in it. Long ago in this district they used to put oaten meal in a crock and throw cold water on it and they called this stuff "sowence". They would make as much one day as done for a week. They lifted it in cupfuls and drank. There is no such a word now as "sowence". It was used in this district in the time of the famine
