- In olden times hedge schools existed in my district. There was a hedge school in Cornaseer. The school was held in the open. Men who had a little knowledge taught in the schools and they were strangers.
School was carried on in the farmer's houses, and the teachers lodged in the houses. They got their food in the houses they stayed in and the pupils paid them one penny a day.
The pupils were taught to read and write, and they spoke Irish in the schools, they were also taught to count. The writing was done by quills which they made from feathers. The teachers remained about three days in each house.
