  1. Hurling and Football Matches.
    The first football match played
    in Co. Wicklow was played in the
    Bottoms, at Rathdrum. The teams
    were Avondale and Conary.
    There were twenty one men on
    each team. There were two scoring
    places. The goal scoring place
    and the point scoring place. One
    goal then was worth any amount
    of points. People used to say "
    As any amount of venial sins
    cannot make a mortal one, neither
    is any amount of points worth
    a goal. The winners were Avondale.
    A man that won fame on
    the field that day was, Mr
    Barry, Main Street, Rathdrum. He
    was playing woth Conary. This
    match was played on St Patrick's
