    or goat's flesh. These were killed about christmas and then salted so that it would last for along time.
    The fairly wealthy people might give a small piece to their poor neighbours at christmas. Fish was often used especially red herring, the price of them was one hundred for three-pence. The people who lived near the coasts would pick shell fish. Other things they used to eat was nettles and water-cress.
    Long ago people used to practise very foolish customs. These were eating enormous meals of eggs and pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.
    The young members of the family would get about three eggs and three pancakes. The older people would consume four or five eggs and a larger number of pancakes. Their idea was that during lent they could not eat any eggs until Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday a similar custom was practised. Other customs were
