- The following is a song made by Paddy Foley of Mullins, Tinahely, Co. Wicklow about 80 years ago. Paddy Foley was a 'local poet' who made many songs. The song was given to me by Thomas Tallon, Redbog, Tinahely on 16th April 1935. He is 55 years of age, a labourer, has spent his life in Redbog & sang the twenty-six stanzas from memory. The song is sometimes called 'The Slasher's Grey Mare' because John Byrne lived in a place call 'The Slash.'
1.) You dealers in horses, where e'er that you hail from,
Give ear to my diffy I've good news to tell
Concerning the cheapness of horses in Dublin,
That good ones shall buy & how freely they sell.
(2). Concerning John Byrne who lived in Curravanish,
To Dublin to purchase a mare he did go,
Which he did I declare
About twenty hands high and as white as the snow
3.) She was drove by a jarvey named one Peter Harvey
Who declared that the mare was both healthy & sound(continues on next page)
