At that time most of the land about Ferns was covered with trees which ran into strips of woodland stretching for miles across that part of the country, one of the wooded strips ran right up to Cruic-na-Mallacht affording excellent cover and protection for such an attack which was no quick or easy task in those days, proof of that fact still remains, as one field still bears its old Irish name - Gort-na-Coille and it lies on the Ferns side of Cruaic-na-Mallacht
