  1. In the early times the people of Ireland had to pay heavy rents for their farms to men known as Land-lords. If they did not pay these rents they were evicted. Many people were evicted in this parish.
    Two families living in Gurtins were evicted by a Landlord named Stafford. It was a very sad sight to see all the little children on a cold winter's evening, turned out on the roadside with their parents where they might die of cold and hunger unless some kind neighbours took pity on them and gave them shelter. But this was a usual sight in the early eighties.
