   bleached. Later it was put on hurdles across a fire, broken with mallets, scutched, hackled and spun into yarn. Then it was woven into cloth, put into a barrel, hackled again and put into a field to bleach. It was then ready to be made into clothes. Sheets, blankets and stockings were made at home. Candles were made from rushes and tallow. Dixons were famous for candle-making. They carried on this where Keely's stores now are. Some spinning wheels are here still. Shoe-Making The principal shoe-maker in the district was Whelan of Irishtown. Only the rich wore boots and even these were well protected by 'tips' and nails. There were often four shoe-makers
