- The LandlordThe principal landlords in this area were Dames-Longworth, Lord Castlemaine, Clanricarde and Lord Mount Sanford Wills. The poor tenants were treated as serfs, and were compelled to pay the rent on their knees, with hat in hand. Evictions occurred every day in the week, the "Battering Ram" wrecked the homesteads of the poor people who could not pay the rent. Dames Longworth was not so cruel as some of the others, although there was a song composed about him called "Rory of the Hill".
