    hunted priests, and escorted him through the darkness of the night, under the shelter of a double hedge which then ran over 'The Bogras' and terminated at the end of Bank of Ireland. Having crossed the street and reached the lane and tannery, Mass was celebrated and the little crowd dispersed in silence as they had come.
    Priest hunters were busy in the district but is is said that on only one occasion did they raid the tanyard. [?] hung outside the doors on Sundays as on weekdays so there was little evidence of what went on within. On the occasion of the raid the alarm was supposed to have been raised by the hooting of a horn. The priest was quickly divested of his vestments - buried with chalice and missal in one of the old pits and the soldiers had to depart with their pray.
