- On the Royal Canal to the west of Thomastown is a townland named Annascannon. The Brisky Marsh. There was an old cemetery which is long since disused.
A short distance down is the townland known as Hydepark or as it was called long ago "High Gap". In the last century these two townlands were noted for their turf trade.
We are told that seven boats were usually loaded on the canal in Winter and Spring: each boat carried on an average of fifty tons of turf.Transcribed by a member of our volunteer transcription project.
