  1. There was a hedge school one time in Mabestown. Mabestown school was the name of it. Master Brown was the master's name that taught in it. He was an Irish man and he taught English as well as Irish. The children had to bring him threepence each every week and that was his payment. They wrote on a slate with a piece of chalk. It was in an old shed they were taught. The master used to sleep in a house near the shed.
