  1. Situated south of Matty Gilavan's house stood the old hedge school about a hundred years ago. The teacher was called Barney Kelly. He was about fifty years of age and he was a tall thin man. Any word he was not able to pronounce he said to the child " Skip that my child, that is a town in France that you or I never will see". To the school there was about thirty pupils going and he taught them reading, writing, arithmetic, and Poetry.
