- There are remains of an old Abbey in the parish of Girley inside the graveyard which was inhabited and occupied by an order of monks known as the Marist Fathers. These were men of great learning who taught many things to the people of that age in this monastery, the ruins of which now remain.
From the interior of this monastery a subterranean passage passes under the road which lies outside the graveyard and leads into Mr. Dillon's field on the opposite side, where there is supposed to be a strong room in which the monks were said to store and secrete the valuables and wealth which this monastery contained.
It is said that people passing the road can hear the hollow sound which indicates that there is an underground passage.Written by Gerty Woods, Fordstown, Kells, ages 14 1/2 years. Information given by James Lynch Snr of Fordstown, Kells, who heard about it as a child in this district.- Collector
