In those days the school-masters had no blackboards. They used a big flat stone instead. For chalk they used a piece of pointed stone.
When they knew how to write well they got a quill pen and paper.
A Mr. Rothwell had a school in Farrell Street in the house now occupied by Mr. Ryan. He only taught gentlemens' sons. Among the pupils who attended it were Mr. Lynch and Mr. Mac Donnell.
Mr. Corcoran had another school on the Height in Bective Square and Mr. Nelson had another in Carrick Street but these were not as high class or as important as Mr. Rothwell's.
The subjects they taught were Irish English Greek Latin and Mathematics. The books they used were "Reading made easy" and Woogan's Spelling Book."
