  1. In olden times Shrove was the chief time for match-making generally at fairs when the people would meet especially whent hey had a few drinks taken they would propose matchmaking for so and so. A couple would be told of to go to the house of the young lady they had in view. They would start making arrangements over a bottle of whiskey as it was generally the custom to have whiskey-punch. When money matters were settled they would arrange a day for the young man and woman to see each other and then if they would settle a day for the wedding to take place. In those days few side cars.
