  1. (no title) (continued)

My grandfather told me the following story, about a man named Darby Kane who lived in the village of Littleton.

    (continued from previous page)
and pointing out with his stick to a spot in the wall over the fireplace said "The gold is there." Then one of the men took the pick-axe, and struck the wall to loosen the stones, but when he did this an angry looking black cat appeared on the wall a little higher up. The man was frightened, but he struck again, but on the second stroke they were all startled by the sound of foot steps coming up the stairs. They looked up and in another moment a dragoon was standing before them with a sword hanging by his sods. Then Darby Kane remembered a part of his dream which told him that the gold was guarded by a dragoon. They considered that the best thing to do was to retire.
