  1. A Ghost Story. April 27th 1938
    One night a man came home from his work. There was no water boiled for his supper, and he asked his wife why she had not had his supper ready.
    She said "It was too dark and I was afraid to go to the well in the field, and the pump in the yard ran dry.
    "Well" he said "I am not staying here". So he left the house and went on and on. Some way down the road he met a man. The man asked him where he was going. He said he was looking for someone who could tell him what was fear. The man said "if you want to know what fear is come down to my house".
    So the man went down and when they went into the house he got a good supper. When he had his supper eaten, the man took him over to a big house by the road. He told him he had hired many people to guard the house but they had all fainted or died.
    When he went into the house he sat down. The landlord went to his own house and brought over a bottle of whiskey and a pistol.
    When the latter went out the man heard chains coming down the stairs. It took the gun and whiskey off the table and ran back up the stairs.
    In the morning when the landlord came over, expecting to find the man dead on the floor,
