- Fairs are held locally every month in a field outside the city of Limerick. Crowds of farmers go there, some with cattle to sell and some buying cattle It is nice to be up early in the morning on a fair day to be watching the droves of cattle of every kind and colour.
A half crown is paid on each beast and a mark is put on them for fear they would be lost. There are two gates leading to the field, one to leave the cattle in and the other to let them out. There are two men standing at the gates taking the toll of the cattle.
It is not nice to be standing there on a wet day. The field contains twenty acres of land. A half crown is paid on each beast for luck, and when they are giving back the money they spit on it as it is the custom
On that day the city is thronged with travelling folk craving people to take them in for a pint(continues on next page)- Collector
