When people got milk from the local farmers, especially some very old fashioned people, it was the custom for the person who supplied the milk to put a pinch of salt in the bottle or can.
This was supposed to prevent the butter from being taken away by charms.
I myself have seen addled eggs taken from the edges of hay cocks & have seen them ? by people on their land.
These were in the cases that came under my observation always goose eggs.
The idea was to transfer bad luck (the non fertility of the eggs) to another.
I and another teacher once discovered the head of a calf in a bag concealed in the furze on a farmer's land on the mountain.
We told the landowner of the discovery & he certainly did not like it.
He said "you'd never know what devilment was behind that".
This happened about 23 years ago.
