    The fields around were brightly crowned with flowers of every kind.
    About midday I chanced to stray, down by the rippling rill.
    And as I passed I met a lass at the foot of Rooska hill.

    She was not tall or vain but straight and plain.
    I own she wore a purple robe beneath a knitted shawl.
    Her golden hair was flowing and in her voice there was a thrill.
    I thought indeed it was the queen that stood in Rooska hill.

    Struck with amaze as I did gaze as she stood in my view.
    My heart did beat with such a feat I thought I'd split in two.
    I then arose and did propose and that with a right good will.
    Come with me my dearest dear to-night from Rooska hill.
