In the days of the Penal Laws, when schools were not allowed, a hedge master taught at Currabinny, which is about 1/4 mile across the ferry from Crosshaven, but is in the Parish of Monkstown, Co. Cork.
He came once a month, and the children from all parts of the district, flocked to him, but the soldiers never caught them.
He taught in one part of our house, that has since been made into two rooms.
The master, who was a very learned man, burned part of a stick in the fire, and then drew a map of the world on the wall, which was
