  1. There was a hedge school in Coolagown in 1848. The school was held in a barn. There were slates used in the school.
    Scholars used to travel around to the farmers houses long ago. They used to stay in each house for a month. Farmers sons fromt he district around used to come to the house where the scholar was and get educated there.
    There was also a school in Ballydorgan. It was held in a house. In Castlelyons there was a school held in the chapel Irish Catechism, Irish and English was taught by the priest.
