- South of the parish there is a cross of five roads called Pendy's Cross. A schoolmaster thought that it came from the Greek word "Penta" which means five but it was called Pendy's Cross before the fifth road was there at all. Long ago a man named Pendy lived there and he used make a fuel called "Pendy" out of a wet mixture made out of three ingredients namely yellow mould "peat Brus" and very slack coal and he sold them by the dozen and for that reason it is called "Pendys Cross."
