    Boys used to make "dancers" out of thread spools. They used to tie the spools together loosely, and shape them like a man. Then tie a string to them and shake them on a piece of tin.
    They used to make flop guns from elder branches, with which to squirt water. They uses to make "fodeens" for catching blackbirds and thrushes.
    Boys used to make faces out of turnips and light a candle inside them, to frighten boys going home at night.
