Long ago, before a girl would get married, she would search the heads of cabbage for a "driuchtín" or a snail; if she found a black one she would be married to a black-haired man, and if she found a brown one, she would be married to a brown-haired man.
About seventy or eighty years ago people got married in their own homes. The parents of the present solicitor in Bandon (Mr O'Driscoll) were married in the bride's home in Castleview, and after their marriage they went for a long ride on horse-back.
