- The old mill at Ballinacarriga was built by John Hazel about two hundred years ago. It was a very large mill and people brought loads of wheat from long distances to be ground. Mr. Hazel had four horses carting corn to and from the stores. He had three or four pairs of mill stones at work.
There was a row of houses from Mr. J. Crowley's house down to the mill and on each side of the road south as far as Mr. Geoghan's house. In these houses the mill workers lived. There were stores and houses from the bridge down along the "Mill Stream" to the big mill, which was stretched across the yard below, with a wether-cock on top of it. The mill was three or four storeys high and there were kilns and buildings underground for drying the wheat.
When the foreign flour came in, the trade went down and they were unable to pay the men and the up-keep of the place, so they were evicted. There was a beautiful house and orchard attached, but they were all plundered and looted, and went to ruin, until there was scarcely a stone left.
