- (continued from previous page)were formerly used for washing clothes. It is a flat wooden instrument shaped like a shovel with a handle about seven and a half inches in length. It is about an inch and a quarter in thickness, nine inches in length and about six inches in breadth at the top.
Not far from our school on the lands of Mr John Draper, in the downland of Carrigscullihy is a round pit, built in all round. It is the remains of a lime kiln, which was used for burning lime by the people of the district. Owing to the scarcity of lime in the district (it was brought from Rossmore and burned in the kiln) this practice was gradually abandoned and so the lime kiln fell into disuse.
Basket making was a very common industry around here long ago, but it has gradually died out, possibly owing to the reasonable prices at which baskets can be obtained now. They were made from(continues on next page)- Informant
