- The majority of the old houses around here was small and roofed with thatch. Certain people had thatching as a trade and often a prize was offered for the method of thatching and for the speediest thatcher
The thatch consisted chiefly of straw and bull-rushes. Special straw was necessary and the rushes were cut in bogs and allowed to dry for a week or two. Rods called "spars" were cut from the tree called "saileac" and they were used to firm the thatch.
