  1. Concerning the early life of St. Patrick, we have few authentic particulars, but tradition fills up some of the gaps in a manner that satisfies most Irishmen. We know he came to Ireland early in the fifth century and that Bantry and Dublin are rival claimants for his first welcome. A famous old song supports the claim of Southern Ireland for this honour:-
