  1. In former times some of the local men won fame in the field of athletics by their accomplishment of feats at running, weight throwing, and bowling. The men who excelled at the former were Warren, a native of Toames, Cotter, Cooldorrihy, and Horgan Droumcarra. Another local man T. Wood a native of Knockane won the all-Ireland Championship for the mile race at Clonmel some years ago. He also won several trophies for weight-throwing. J Horgan another native of Knockane also performed extraordinary feats at weight-throwing.
