- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)still, now as your brother does not come this way I mean to have revenge on you"; all of a sudden he made a rush for Seán with his bayonet but Seán was wide awake and he jumped aside. They parried for a while and the ghost was forcing Seán back until he had him back to the fence, then Seán found out he could not go any further back and it was useless for to turn about. He made a desperate attack and in the struggle that followed he knocked the musket from the hands of the spirit and then with desperate courage he made a dart with his pike, stuck the ghost and have him a sling over his shoulder and threw him over the fence behind his back. Seán turned immediately but to his greatest surprise there was no ghost at all to be seen. He picked up the musket but it was empty and very likely many an Irishman came down by that musket; next day they buried the musket in the grave inside the ditch, and the Petticoat Loose was never seen after. So after all the old saying is true, "steel will banish a ghost".
