- (continued from previous page)Carrick-on-Shannon was then only a small town, but it was the only place around in which a butter-market was held. The markets began late in September. Before the roads were made all the trade was carried on, on, the water. The people of Kilmore had to bring the butter in creels to certain points along the Shannon's banks. Here they could procure a boat, and so reach the market,. A penny was the fare for three miles.
With the money they could buy meal. This in fact was the only food-stuff. There was no such thing as tea then known.
This practice was continue up to about fifty years ago. This story was brought by Christopher Rhatigan. He got it from his grandfather Owdy McCormack who is now 87 years. He says he remembers well seeing and hearing these things.- Collector
