used to meet him on his way home from rambling but there was no sign of him now. Even though he whistled the dog didn't come. The black dog kept McGirty in that spot until dawn and then vanished in a wisp of smoke.
Some days a priest was coming in from shooting in the marsh and he had a shotgun with him. It was late, and a very dark night, and exactly the same thing happened the priest as McGirty. But when the dog appeared in front of the priest he levelled his shotgun and fired. The dog disappeared in a ball of flame. Never again was he seen on the marsh. People say that the dog was the devil in the appearence of a dog.
