  1. Portlaoighise is quite a prosperous town now compared with olden days when people had a lot of hardship when they had to work for fourpence a day.
    Take for instance Church avenue in years gone by there were a lot of small houses. There was one house owned by a lady named Sally Pink. An old lady by the name of Miss McAuliffe kept a day school at which thirty pupils attended.
    In those days people used to walk to the Heath Chapel to the Quarant are where Doctor Murphy gave sermons.
