    before sunrise of the following month the first day of may and have a look out to see would any-one be seen skimming his spring well, and the next time he would be churning after the 1st of May to tie the plough chains around the churn and put the plough coulter in the fire and start churning and the guilty man would come to the door. He wasn't to admit him. It did so happen the man he saw picking the clay and skimming the well came to the door and he besought him to tell no-one and he would never meddle with his butter again. The next time Mr Heightley churned he had a churn of butter.

  2. The lucky churn dash
    There was another man named Ned Dunne Knockbawn, His mother was churning with a dash churn and the handle came out so Ned went out to cut a handle in the ditch. He brought it in and put into the dash and started churning again. No sooner was it in when the churn filled p with butter. He was so rejoiced and frightened that he went to a fairy-man in Ballyfin and told him his story. The fairy-man told him that he was a foolish man to tell him or anyone for the
