- It must be said that the Irish attached much importance to the memorials of their illustrious dead; They, therefore, erected cromlechs head stones, and great structures, over their dear departed. For this purpose, there were certain fields set apart for the burials of the people.
This parish contains a great number of grave-yards, namely Durro grave-yard, the Castle grave-yard, Aughmacart, Tubberboe and Killogue grave-yards. Durrow grave-yard is the principal one in the parish. The others are used by certain families in the district.
The one nearest to us is Aughmacart grave-yard. It is situated on the side of the road leading from Oldtown to Rathdowney. This grave-yard contains burial vaults. Only one vault is to be seen there at present, and it belongs to the Fitz-Patrick of Coolcashin. Over the doorway, the following inscription is(continues on next page)- Collector
