   the sack." Immediately the gentleman began speaking the cat drove her nails through the sack into the man's back. "It is a little ball of wool" said the man. "My wife spun it and she asked me to take it to the weaver." "What sort of thread is it," said the gentleman. Again the cat drove her nails to the quick in the poor man. "I don't rightly know what sort of thread it is" said he. "Well show it to me," said the gentleman. Once again the cat put her nails into the man but this time he was so tormented that he threw the sack on the road and when he did the gentleman shook the cat out of it.

   The cat ran off as quickly as she could and the hounds ran after her. The hounds were a splendid pack yet they could not gain an inch on the cat. At last the cat faced a little house where an old woman lived alone. As the cat was coming near the house the gentleman noticed that one of the hounds was gaining on her. There was a broken window in the house and the cat sprang to get in through it but as she did the hound sprang at her and just grazed her side. When the cat got in the hounds began to run around the house howling and barking. When the gentleman and some of the neighbours who had joined in the hunt , came up they broke in the door and they found no trace of a
