Scéal F - Gabha na gCleas (continued)
“Long ago there lived in the South of Ireland a widower and his only child - a son.”
(continued from previous page)surpirse - she could not understand where they came from. Then Gabha na gCleas and his apprentices changed themselves into seven musicians and began to play for the young lady. They played beautifully and when they stopped the lady felt that she ought to recompense them, so she asked them what they would like. They asked for the rings on her fingers. At first she refused but they played again and again and finally she agreed to give them the rings but just as she was going to pull them off the rings jumped off her fingers right into the fire. Then some of the apprentices changed themselves into pokers and tongs and the others used them to turn out the ashes. When they were coming near the rings, the latter changed into two grains of wheat and jumped out through the window into a wheat stack in the haggard. At once some of the apprentices turned themselves into flails and the others used them to thresh the wheat. When they had separated the grain from the straw Gabha na gCleas and his six apprentices turned themselves into seven turkeys and began to eat the corn. Then the two fugitives turned themselves into two foxes and bit the heads off the seven turkeys.
After that the two got married and lived happily ever afterwards.- Collector
