    1
    There's so many pirate critics now at sea,
    Who of honest simple authors make a prey,
    It's dangerous for one to venture out.
    Although with with learning copper'd round about.
    2.
    The discerning eyes of this evenom'd corps,
    Into the smallest crevice they will pore,
    To their darts of envy and malicious balls
    The unhappy Author oft a victim falls.
    3.
    I'm a poor tyro in the muses' banner
    And I have ventured out in quest of honour.
    Arm'd with one gun in a slender open boat,
    I on Life's sea amongst the critics float
