- Shops were not common in olden times. The people had to go to town to make purchases. The shops still carry on a great deal of business after Mass. In Glenmore the shops are crowded after Mass and also in Slieverue, that is Groceries, meat and everything wanted for the house are bough on Sunday after Mass. Money was not alway given for goods they used to barter with them long ago. The bartering is still done. When people go into a shop with eggs and butter they get their groceries for them.Tick is the word I know for getting goods on credit.There are still hucksters going round,
A "make" is a halfpeny
A "wing" is a penny
A "kid's eye" is a three penny bit
A "tanner" is a sixpenny bit.
